We were delighted to provide the string quartet music for Bethany and Connor’s beautiful Catholic wedding ceremony, working alongside the church’s resident organist to create a service filled with beautiful, sacred music and personal touches.
Choosing music for a Catholic wedding ceremony
Catholic wedding ceremonies are among the most structured when it comes to music choices. Music during the Mass or liturgy generally needs to be sacred and appropriate for worship, meaning that many of the popular wedding songs and film themes couples may have heard at other ceremonies are not usually permitted during the service itself.
However, this does not mean your ceremony music has to feel limited or impersonal.

Working with the church organist
Many Catholic churches have a resident organist who plays an important role in the liturgy. Rather than replacing the organ, a string quartet can beautifully complement it.
For Bethany and Connor’s wedding, we worked closely with the church organist, sharing the musical responsibilities throughout the ceremony.
The organist provided the traditional liturgical music, including:
Kyrie
The Gloria
The Alleluia Acclamation
Music during or after Communion
The Fern Quartet provided the string accompaniment for key moments of the ceremony, including:
The bridal entrance
Hymns
Signing of the register
The recessional music as the newlyweds left the church
This combination allowed the ceremony to retain the traditional sound of the Catholic Church while adding the warmth, elegance and emotion that live strings bring.
During Bethany and Connor’s wedding, the Priest allowed non-religious music in the parts that did not formally make up part of the ceremony:
We played Handel's Water Music as the congregation took their seats.
We played
"Glasgow Love Theme" for the nervous waiting Groom.
"I can't help falling in Love" by Elvis for the Bridal Entrance.
"Amazing Grace" and "Jerusalem" for two hymns.
"Gabriel's Oboe" during Communion.
"Now we are free" from Gladiator, during the signing of the register.
Finally "This will be (an everlasting love)" for the couples exit.
